SkinSky

Skin Sky is a project which was initiated via the World Wide Web. Skin and Sky will form the visual material of this project. Participants are invited to contribute two images one of Skin and one of Sky, these should be personal depicting the self and place. The two elements have been considered through my own work and are identified as the two fundamental aspects of our experience regardless of global location, culture, wealth or education. We each experience the physical boundary of our own skin. Through our skin we experience the physicality of the world we live in. Our skin similarly defines us. We each experience the sky, in its various forever changing forms, it nevertheless unites us and defines the outward appearance of our global community. The notion of confinement is explored in this piece. We are each confined within our own bodies, we are each confined to an experience of living on this planet. Technology offers tantalising escape routes, space travel, virtual reality, cloning etc. Yet this is nevertheless a shared experience. I hope that the images achieve something more than their individual content. When the project is accessed on line images can be selected, bringing together the two elements of skin and sky to form a landscape. As technical restrictions are overcome, this should allow for a more fluid response to the work. As images are continually added the work is continually in a point of transition. I would like to see this grow into a large web of visual material. More participants need to be encouraged to respond, and the work may need to take on another form to involve others who may not have access to appropriate technology.
